Reliability. Adaptability. Efficiency. Versatility.

These four terms embody what an owner or executive should expect out of an information technology. It is therefore the IT department's responsibility to be the embodyment of those terms. The IT departments of today are vastly different from those of yesterday. Tomorrow's should be nothing like what we know today either. The rate of progress in the development of new technologies is exponential so it is inconceivable that the department responsible for the management of those technologies be stagnant. As a business support group, the IT department must remain aligned to the business model and maximize its potential or risk the assumption that it is an expendable asset. In today's world, where everyone is connected, the ability to reach those potential clients seems relatively simple. It is now the expectations of potential clients that weighs heavily in their business decisions. Anyone can receive spam in their inbox or a solicitation call on their cell phone. It is those businesses that can reach them through means not stereotypical of today's advertisements that will earn their business. The innovation that impresses them is innovation they can use and adapt to their own application. This is where an IT department must view itself as a separate entity to the business as it must sell itself each and every day. Prove that it can contribute to the success of the business and be a dynamic part of the business model. Information Technology is not an easy investment to make, but when applied correctly, it can push the boundaries of potential to heights at a pace with its own advancement.
